Review: Port Noir – The Dark We Keep

Port Noir’s “The Dark We Keep” is a brooding, riff-driven descent into the Swedish trio’s heaviest and most emotionally charged work to date. The album wears its darkness on its sleeve and adds a layer of existential dread. From the blast beats of “Redshift” to the pulverizing breakdowns of “Ebb and Flow,” the band’s evolution is undeniable: their sound has evolved into a dense collision of progressive metal, alternative rock, and a melancholy that feels almost tactile. The vocals, at times spectral, at others hip-hop inflected, weave through the layered instrumentation in eerie, ghost-like manner. Songs like “Burst” and “Noir” showcase the band’s ability to balance thunderous heaviness with moments of haunting melody, though not every cut lands with the same impact.

“The Dark We Keep” is thick with dark atmosphere and emotional depth. It demands to be experienced as a whole, a nocturnal journey that rewards patience and repeated listens. The closer, “We Shall Die Together,” delivers a devastating emotional payoff, its devastating lyrics and soaring vocals leaving a mark long after the final note fades.

The production is another standout, with every instrument given room to breathe yet still contributing to the album’s oppressive, immersive weight. The interplay between the crushing riffs and the electronic textures creates a soundscape that feels both vast and claustrophobic. It’s this attention to detail that elevates “The Dark We Keep” above mere genre exercise, making it a record that lingers in the mind as much as it resonates in the chest.

If there’s a misstep, it’s that the album’s reliance on mood sometimes comes at the expense of memorability. Not every riff or hook sticks, and the mid-album lull can test the patience of even the most devoted listener. But these are minor quibbles for an album that otherwise feels so deliberate, so meticulously crafted. Port Noir have created something that’s as intellectually engaging as it is viscerally powerful. “The Dark We Keep” is a record that may not always surprise, but always satisfies.
