Review: Forsmán – Brenndar Rústir og Fuðrandi Fjörur

“Brenndar Rústir og Fuðrandi Fjörur” is Forsmán’s attempt to carve their own path through the volcanic ash of modern Icelandic black metal. It’s the sound of a band finding its footing while declarating their vision, one that balances primal fury with a startling clarity and ambition. The album seethes with a controlled chaos, yet there’s a density to the compositions that rewards repeated listens. Forsmán layer dissonance and melody into a maelstrom that feels both ancient and urgently contemporary. The production is thick, dynamic, and alive, allowing every blast beat and tremolo-picked arpeggio to cut through without sacrificing the album’s oppressive atmosphere.
Songs like “Svartir svanir” and “Andvana” are twisting and turning with a malevolent intelligence. The band’s ability to weave synths and subtle textural details into the mix only deepens the sense of a record on fire, both literally and spiritually. The vocals, a harrowing blend of snarls and growls, feel like the voice of something long buried, now clawing its way back to the surface. There’s a theatricality to the delivery, but it never feels forced.
The record’s pacing is solid, with moments of respite only serving to heighten the impact of the next onslaught. “Valdníðsla” and “Kynjamyndir” showcase a band unafraid to explore the darker corners of their sound, while “Lof mér líf þitt að taka” and “Hræ hins almáttuga” push the intensity to almost unbearable levels, their sheer weight threatening to crush anything in their path. “Barmafylltar fjöldagrafir” closes the record with a sense of finality, as if the last sounds of a dying world are finally fading into silence.
“Brenndar Rústir og Fuðrandi Fjörur” is a record that demands attention to feel the punishing but transcendent journey through the heart of Icelandic black metal’s new vanguard. It’s a record that meets the standards set by the likes of Misþyrming and Svartidauð with offering it’s vision.
