Review: Drawn Into Descent – Onrust

Drawn Into Descent’s “Onrust” offers atmospheric black metal that is a descent into a world where desolation isn’t just a theme but a physical presence. From the opening moments of “Teloorgang,” it’s clear that “Onrust” is not here to comfort. The band draws on loneliness and emptiness as the only constants in modern society and invokes this feelings wth every song snippet. The production is sharp, almost clinical, but never sterile and lets every instrument shine.
What sets “Onrust” apart from other mleodic black metal bands is its refusal to rely on the usual crutches of the genre. There are no grand, sweeping melodies to soften the blow, no moments of cathartic release to break the tension. Instead, the album operates through precision and restraint, its power lying in the way it builds atmosphere. The result is an album that feels less like a collection of songs and more like a single, unbroken arc of controlled intensity.Yet, for all its discipline, Onrust is not without its moments of raw, feral energy. The aggression here is not the blind rage of traditional black metal, but something more calculated, more insidious, espcially in “Drenkeling” and the title track “Onrust”. The album’s ability to balance its bleakness with a sense of forward motion is one of its greatest strengths. There’s a certain irony in how Onrust captures the claustrophobia of urban life so vividly. This is music that feels like it was forged in the smog-choked heart of a dying city, where the weight of modernity presses down on every individual until they’re nothing more than a shadow. It’s a feeling that’s as rare as it is unsettling in black metal, a genre that often romanticizes the wild and the untamed. Drawn Into Descent, however, dive into the bleakness of the man-made world, crafting an album that feels as much like a critique as it does a eulogy.
“Onrust” is not an easy listen, nor should it be. It’s an album that challenges, that unsettles, but it’s also an album of remarkable craft and vision, a testament to what can be achieved when a band commits fully to their artistic intent. A surprising and very strong addition to this year’s black metal roster.
