Review: Bosse-De-Nage – Hidden Fires Burn Hottest

Bosse-de-Nage’s had their new album eight years in the making. The San Francisco quartet has long operated on the fringes of black metal, post-hardcore, and whatever other genres they’ve seen fit to absorb and mutate, and they took their time to refine their approach into an album both sprawling and intimate. “Hidden Fires Burn Hottest” greatest strength lies in its refusal to be pinned down, even though black metal still takes the front seat.

The opening salvo of “Where To Now?” sets the tone with jagged, repetitive guitar work and a rhythmic persistence which feels like a hypnotic incantation. The band’s signature blend of black metal and post-hardcore’s is intact, but there’s a newfound maturity in how these elements are deployed. The vocals are a mix of harsh shouts, whispered asides, and stream-of-consciousness musings and thus add a layer of literary depth. Songs like “Mementos” and “In the Name of the Moth” showcase a band unafraid to let silence and space play as crucial a role as walls of noise. The spoken-word interludes, serve as a reminder that Bosse-de-Nage is a band more interested in evoking a mood than adhering to convention.

What’s most striking about “Hidden Fires Burn Hottest” is how it balances its experimental tendencies with a sense of cohesion. It is easy to listen to, but it rewards in-depth listening with unlayered structures. The production is immaculate, ensuring that every nuance is captured with clarity. The result is an album that feels both meticulously crafted and organically alive.

If there’s a critique to be made, it’s that the album’s deliberate pacing and occasional repetition might test the patience of those looking for more immediate payoffs. Bosse-de-Nage has never been a band content to rest on their laurels, and “Hidden Fires Burn Hottest” proves they’re still pushing forward, even if the path they’re carving is one that’s uniquely their own. They created an album for those who appreciate music that challenges as much as it captivates; an effort that solidifies Bosse-de-Nage’status as one of the most intriguing acts in modern extreme music.
