Review: Chora – There Lies A Friend I Once Knew
Chora is a band out of Memphis, Tennessee and obviously hold their Cult Of Luna-collection in high regard. Which isn’t a bad thing to do at all, and if it’s lead to a massive album like “There Lies A Friend I Once Knew” everyone’s happy.
The album consists of five songs, of which three clock in over ten minutes – and they never get boring, which is quite a feat to accomplish. The basic vibe of “There Lies A Friend I Once Knew” is cleary in early Cult Of Luna, especially the grandiose “Salvation” and “Somewhere Along The Highway”-era. Chora know how to keep the listener engaged over the whole length of the album, as the full ambum stream proves:
If we’re speaking about a postcore record, there’s Neurosis to be mentioned too. Chora integrate traces of Neurosis-sound into their own sound and add a good doese of doom-ish sludge to it – even more ingredients to keep the listener engaged.
Chora deliver a high-quality postcore record. In the end, they can’t iginite that spark of genius that Cult Of Luna and Neurosis possess, but make no mistake: “There Lies A Friend I Once Knew” is still a massive, formidable record. Check it out! And check out the gorgeous vinyl variants that match the beauty of the music perfectly.
